TRAVEL SNAPSHOT
Ukraine is a very fascinating country- there is really no other like it. Situated in Eastern Europe, Ukraine is the second largest European country trailing behind Russia. Following an extensive history of conflict with its neighbors (especially Russia), Ukraine officially stated its independence in 1991.
There are many things to do in Ukraine. You can enjoy Kyiv’s cool night life, party it up in Odessa, explore the Chernobyl nuclear disaster area (yes, it’s safe), visit little towns, and explore the beautiful mountains. You should also most definitely try some delicious Ukrainian cuisine.
IMPORTANT INFO
Language: While Ukrainian is the official language of the country, Russian is also very commonly spoke.
Currency: Ukraine uses the Ukrainian hryvnia. As of 2021, $1USD = 26 hryvnia.
Electrical: Ukraine uses a supply voltage of 230 V with a standard frequency of 50 Hz. Outlets use plug types C and F. I recommend using a universal adapter.
Money: Most places, especially in the city, take card. There are also many ATMs around that allow you to withdraw cash. If you are planning on traveling outside city areas, I recommend bringing some cash with you.
Safety: Ukraine is generally safe for travel and solo travel. I never felt unsafe while there. However, it is wise to take precautions.
Weather: I visited Ukraine in the summer and the weather was absolutely beautiful. To avoid crowds, however, you may wish to visit during early summer (May to June) or late summer and beginning of fall (September to October).
