Chakras are points of pure healing energy (otherwise known as prana) that are located across various parts of our body. This energy acts as a life force connecting our mind, body, and spirit. When our chakras are balanced, we are at peace with ourselves and are in a more fulfilled state of existence.
There are 7 main chakras- the root chakra, the sacral chakra, the solar plexus chakra, the heart chakra, the throat chakra, the third eye chakra, and the crown chakra.
In this post, I will be running through everything you need to know about how to balance the heart chakra.
Heart Chakra
Sanskrit Name: Anahata
Color: Green
Element: Air
Where is the Heart Chakra located?
The heart chakra is located in the center of your chest.
What does the Heart Chakra control?
The heart chakra is mainly focused on love, compassion, trust, and affection. Because the heart chakra is the fourth chakra, it sits directly in the middle of all your other major chakras, acting as a connector. It is often said that this connection also bridges physical matters and spiritual matters.
Essentially, the heart chakra embodies the way you love, your vulnerability, how much love and trust you can offer another and oneself, and forgiveness. Love is a dominant healing force utilized through the heart chakra. Love and wholeness bring fulfillment and peace to your being.
How do you know if your Heart Chakra is out of balance?
When your heart chakra is balanced, you can love deeply and fully. You are not scared to be vulnerable, but understand that everything is connected through love. This allows you to give the fullness of your love unquestioningly to yourself and others.
If the heart chakra is blocked, there will be lots of fear around love. You will have less compassion and empathy towards others and isolate yourself. You will have difficulty in forgiving and moving on from past traumas- because of this, you can often subconsciously switch off your emotions and detach yourself from them.
If the heart chakra is overactive, you can exhibit signs of codependency. You will tend to fall into toxic relationships out of an unfilled desire for love. There may be neglect of your own needs and a loss of your sense of self in the process. You may give way more than you have and be depleted in the process.
How to balance the Heart Chakra
I once lived my life plagued by an unbalanced heart chakra. I shut people out and isolated myself, forcing my emotions down where I could no longer feel them. It can be extremely difficult to heal your heart chakra because it also means healing from the past trauma that caused you to be in this position. Since love is such a powerful force, the pain from love trauma cuts deep.
I believe the first step to healing is to become aware of how your chakra came to be blocked or overactive. This is a difficult process for many. I highly recommend checking out Teal Swan’s book The Completion Process. It walks you through how to recognize childhood memories that still have a hold on you and how to resolve these traumas that still linger over your adult life.
There are also other steps you can take. Reading and watching movies about love, journaling about love, listening to music filled with love- this can help bring you closer to that true sense of wholeness.
Meditation and mindfulness are also good practices. When you are in the middle of a crisis, it’s important to stop and ask yourself why you feel this way, what caused it, is it logical, and how can you remove yourself from these negative feelings.
It also helps to increase your actions of generosity and compassion towards others (even if you don’t feel it yet). It can be small things, like buying a coffee for a friend or leaving a larger than normal tip. Seeing the effect small acts of kindness have on others will bring your energy closer to that of a balanced heart chakra.
Foods
Food is a physical entity composed of a kind of energy that we put in our bodies. This energy can become us- therefore, it is important to be mindful about what sorts of energies we are putting into our bodies. Some specific foods have very healing energy for the heart chakra:
- Fruits and veggies: broccoli, spinach, jake, lettuce, celery, brussells sprouts, asparagus cucumber, zucchini, matcha, avocado, lime, mint, peas, kiwi, green apples, and other greens
Crystals
Crystals have their own specific energy and frequency. Meditation or being surrounded by certain frequencies can help alleviate the block on your heart chakra and balance it.
