Chakras are points of pure healing energy (otherwise known as prana) that are located across various parts of our body. This energy acts as a life force connecting our mind, body, and spirit. When our chakras are balanced, we are at peace with ourselves and are in a more fulfilled state of existence.
There are 7 main chakras- the root chakra, the sacral chakra, the solar plexus chakra, the heart chakra, the throat chakra, the third eye chakra, and the crown chakra.
In this post, I will be running through everything you need to know about the throat chakra.
Throat Chakra
Sanskrit Name: Vishuddha
Color: Blue
Element: Ether
Where is the Throat Chakra located?
The throat chakra is located at the center of the neck at the level of your throat.
What does the Throat Chakra do?
As the fifth of the 7 major chakras, the throat chakra is more geared towards spiritual matters (while the first half are more geared towards physical matters). The throat chakra is responsible for communication, self-expression, authenticity, and honesty. It aids in having a healthy dialogue with yourself as well as when you speak with others. While your sacral chakra works towards the creativity of your being, the throat chakra turns those ideas into words so that you can better express yourself.
How do you know if your Throat Chakra is out of balance?
When your throat chakra is balanced, you will be in harmony with your ability to communicate. You don’t have a problem speaking up when you want to. You are able to speak authentically about yourself and your ideas. What you say is honest and doesn’t lack integrity.
When your throat chakra is blocked, you have difficulty with self-expression. It is possible you will have difficulty speaking up, which can lead to a lot of anxiety around talking. Sometimes, a blocked throat chakra can be mistaken for shyness.
When the throat chakra is overactive, you have a tendency to over-speak. You dominate conversations in unwanted ways, speak shallowly about others (gossip), or aggressively and judgingly towards people in your life. Sometimes you speak without thinking and say things that can hurt others.
How to balance your Throat Chakra
There are many things you can do to help with balancing the throat chakra. One of the best ways is to practice speaking with someone you are close to and trust. Try to speak your personal truths, even if it is difficult. If this is too hard for you, it may help to start by journaling. Writing your truths will help you to translate them into words.
You can use your voice in all kinds of ways. Sing a song, read a book out loud, talk to yourself as you go about your day- really, anything using your voice in authentic and meaningful ways can help to balance it.
It also helps to listen. While speaking is one-half of the equation, listening to others is just as important. Play some music, listen to an audiobook, go outside and listen to the sounds of nature- there are so many possibilities.
There are many things you can incorporate into your life to help balance your throat chakra. Meditation and mindfulness are some of the best practices. There are various crystals, foods, affirmations, yoga poses, and essential oils that are beneficial to your throat chakra. Keep reading to learn more about the specific ones that you should use.
Foods
Food is a physical entity composed of a kind of energy that we put in our bodies. This energy has the ability to become us- therefore, it is important to be mindful about what sorts of energies we are putting into our bodies. There are some specific foods that have very healing energy for the throat chakra:
- Fruits and veggies: blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, dragon fruit, kelp, apples, pears, plums, lemon
- Liquids: Water, coconut water, herbal teas, honey
Crystals
Crystals have their own specific energy and frequency. Meditation or being surrounded by certain frequencies can help alleviate the block on your throat chakra and balance it. You can buy a crystal starter kit for chakra meditation or buy crystals individually based on their unique properties. Here is a list of helpful crystals for balancing your throat chakra:
Aquamarine – healing from past trauma, relieves stress, reveals suppressed emotion, peaceful and calming

Blue Lace Agate – improves mental function, heals emotional health, helps with throat infections

I recommend choosing whichever ones call to you the most.

I use my voice for authentic self-expression.
I communicate honestly.
I know when to speak and I know when to listen.
I stand up for what I believe in.
