With its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, China offers a unique and captivating travel experience.

However, the question that lingers in the minds of many potential visitors is: Is China safe to travel?

As someone who moved to China at 19 years old (knowing absolutely nobody), I am happy to say that YES, China is definitely safe to travel!

Is China Safe to Travel To?

Here are a few reasons I consider China one of the safest countries to travel to anywhere:

1. Low Crime Rates:

China boasts relatively low crime rates compared to many other countries. Violent crimes are rare, and tourists often find the streets to be safe even late at night.

I spent many late nights walking around various cities and never once had any safety issues (never felt in danger either).

2. Public Health and Safety:

China has made significant strides in public health and safety. The country has modern medical facilities and a robust public health system.

Major cities are equipped with international hospitals and clinics where English-speaking staff are available.

However, it’s advisable for travelers to carry necessary medications, check food safety standards, and be mindful of potential health risks.

China has an extensive and efficient transportation network, including high-speed trains, buses, and domestic flights.

While accidents can happen anywhere, China places a strong emphasis on transportation safety, and fatal incidents are relatively rare.

4. Natural Disasters:

China is sometimes afflicted by natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and typhoons, depending on the region and time of year.

However, as long as travelers stay informed about local weather conditions and follow guidance from local authorities, they will be fine.

China is built on the ideals of respect for others (especially elders).

I have personally found that politeness is highly regarded and adhered to (except when the old ladies cut you in line for the bathroom, but honestly, all the best to them).

This goes as far as to say that I feel comfortable leaving my belongings unattended and not worrying about someone stealing them (don’t do this of course, but usually it’s fine).

7. Strict Law Enforcement

China adheres to strict law enforcement, which usually goes a long way for curbing crime rates.

You’ll find security and law enforcement professionals everywhere, especially in Beijing (also soldiers!)

While this is morning common in big cities, strict laws go a long way in keeping citizens well-behaved.

While China is generally safe, here are a number of recommended safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in China:

Keep yourself updated on the latest travel advisories and local news.
Familiarize yourself with the emergency contact numbers in China, including the local equivalents of 911.

Respect Local Laws and Customs:

Familiarize yourself with Chinese laws and regulations, and be sure to abide by them.
Respect cultural norms, especially when visiting religious sites and during festivals.

Is China Safe to Solo Travel?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. China is definitely safe for solo travel.

I traveled by myself all over the country, even taking night trains and being roomed with cute families.

I was always treated with dignity and respect, many even going entirely out of their way to assist me.
